Spay / neuter bill

Apr 16, 2007 @ 11:20 am by volunteer
  1. Dear Connecticut Voters,

Good news! The Environment Committee has favorably reported HB 7194—humane legislation to expand subsidized spay/neuter services for low-income persons and feral cat rescuers—and referred it to the Finance Committee.

HB 7194 still needs some improvements, and the ASPCA is working with legislators in an effort to ensure that they occur. In the meantime, it is essential that legislators continue to hear that constituents want them to support this bill.

    What You Can Do
Please send an email to your state senator and representative requesting that they both support HB 7194 and urge Finance Committee Co-Chairs Senator Eileen Daily and Rep. Cam Staples to hold a vote on this legislation.

We thank you for your continued support of the ASPCA and Connecticut’s animals!

Animal fighting bill passes Congress!
ApApril 11, 2007

Victory! Animal Fighting Bill Heads to President

Dear Marsha,

Last night at 8:06 p.m., I watched history happen. The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act.

The House of Representatives passed the same bill, H.R. 137, late last month by a vote of 368 to 39. What this means is that after an almost six-year battle, the struggle to
enact meaningful federal penalties for animal fighting has passed its final congressional hurdle. The legislation now is headed to the desk of President Bush, who is expected to sign the measure into law. The new law will take effect immediately, and I can assure you that this is a dark and long-dreaded day in the dogfighting and cockfighting worlds.

I cannot tell you know grateful I am for the efforts of each of you who sent emails, made phone calls, wrote letters and visited your federal legislators on Capitol Hill and in their home districts. You kept the pressure on and your tireless efforts and support made the difference. The cockfighting lobby was organized, and its leaders poured hundreds of thousands of dollars to derail the legislation — but we out-hustled them and we carried the day.

Nearly every week, there are reports of dog fighting and cockfighting crimes in the United States. It is a vast underground network of people who revel in seeing animals tear one another apart and gamble on the outcomes of the staged spectacles. Now federal law enforcement officials have the tools they need to uproot these underground animal fighting enterprises and put a halt to the the abhorrent cruelty inflicted on dogs, birds and other animals.

I hope this victory inspires you to keep working on behalf of public policies to protect animals. Animal fighting pits will be closing throughout the nation, and it is joyous day for animals. This victory reminds us to never to give up, and that there are rewards for compassionate action and perseverance. Please share this tremendous news with others and let them know that you had a part in making it happen.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

Come get an orange kitty. No, I’m serious.

Nov 28, 2006 @ 10:58 pm by <ADMINNICENAME>

I was at the shelter on Saturday, and there were the same gang from Girard that I blogged about on OCTOBER 1 (!!!). And it’s not just unsocialized frady cats. There is Cosmo, Samson, Hercules, plus cuties Pixie and Cleo (not orange). There are 7 Girard cats left, plus Cally who came in at about the same time.  I just can’t believe they are not cuddling up with someone on a couch right now. Here are some photos of them being super lovey:

Success in Guilford

Nov 05, 2006 @ 06:07 pm by <ADMINNICENAME>

What a cute family!William got adopted It was seasonably cold, but that didn’t keep lot’s of people from coming out to see our animals in Guilford yesterday in front of PAWS by the Green . In total, one adult cat, two kittens, and three dogs found homes. It is always fun to help people find a new companion to love and cherish and yesterday was no exception. In addition, my own kitties got some love as I purchased a CUTE catnip toy from Paws. My tabby Milo went absolutely crazy for it! If you are interested in dog accessories of all kinds, this is a cute shop.

Bundle of joy

I didn’t mention how friendly Cally is. He enjoyed being brushed. LOVED treats. And he is a drooler. Here is a photo of him and his slobbery mouth.

Orange kitties, oh how I love thee

Oct 01, 2006 @ 03:11 pm by Kellie

I was at the shelter yesterday, Sept. 30, and as a “cat person” I was socializing the cats that are available for adoption. Wow, we have some CUTE kitties. Of course, 11 cats were of the orange tabby variety. For those who don’t know the story, there was a home that had 93 cats that ended up in our shelter. The crazy part is that it started with 1 pregnant calico. So most of her descendents are orange or diluted calicos. I think this kind of cat is know to be friendly and the 11 that we have are no exception. Of the 93, we have only 13 left (2 dilute calicos). We also have a FATTY girl, who is also adorable and loves the pets. And a boy brown tabby who loves his treats and is a big drooler. Basically, you can’t go wrong at the shelter for cats right now. But we are at full capacity, so we still need people to come in and adopt! –Kellie, volunteerorange3600.pngorange2600.JPGorange1600.JPGfatty600.JPG

Welcome!

Hi animal lovers,
This is the first post on the new blog. This blog was created for people who are interested in matters associated with animals that are currently live at, have once lived at, or could potentially live at the Robin Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter or any animal shelter. I hope that shelter volunteers, adopters (or potential adopters) of shelter animals, shelter staff, and people interested in issues important to shelter animals will participate and post to this blog.
